Free web icons
If you want to add a professional edge to your website or web application then you will be looking to use a quality set of icons. There are a number of really useful free icon sets out there if you know where to look.
Perhaps one of the most famous sets of free web icons is the FamFamFam Silk icons. These look great and the collection is large enough to include most of the common icon types you will need. The website also has a set of flag icons and a smaller collection of free web icons in gif format.
Another good collection that is in a slightly different style is the Sweetie Basepack icon set. This again is in the very useful png format with alpha transparencies. The website also has a small web communications icon set.
With the rise of Web 2.0 design trends we have seen a lean towards web site designers using fewer, larger quality icons. Therefore the need to find and use such icons is important. The Crystal Project collection offers a good selection that many may find useful. It is also featured on the Wikimedia Commons website.
The above collections are only examples of what is on offer and I am sure there are equally good free icons available that I have yet to discover. These collections should be enough to keep most web developers happy though.
